Woodpeckers are interesting birds. There are over 180 species of woodpecker and they can be found all over the world except in Australia. One of the largest woodpecker species is the ivory-billed woodpecker. This species measures from 48 - 52 centimetres in length and weighs from 0.45 to 0.56 kilograms while the smallest woodpecker is the downy woodpecker, which can grow up to only 15 to 17 centimetres in length.

Woodpeckers have powerful, pointed beaks that work as a hammer to strip bark from trees and find insects to eat. They tap an estimated 8000 to 12 000 times per day. Their tongues are very long, up to 10 centimetres long, and have a glue-like substances on the tip for catching insects.

Birds usually have one toe pointing back and three pointing forward on each foot. However, woodpeckers are different because they have two sharp claws pointing back and two sharp claws pointing forward on each foot to help them cling to the sides of tree. Woodpeckers also have hardened tail feathers which they press against tree surfaces to help support their weight.

The lifespan of a woodpecker is 4 to 11 years and its diet consists mainly of insects, fruits, acorns and nuts. These awesome birds live in forest and wooded areas with lots of trees.
